The UAE Ministry of Social Affairs plans to create a UAE Publishers Association that will operate as a public welfare society with its headquarters based in Sharjah, UAE.

According to online media reports, the association’s objectives aim to improve the publishing industry in the UAE, represent UAE publishers locally and internationally, develop the publishing profession in the UAE, protect the interests of UAE publishers, cooperate with local bodies working in the fields of publishing, printing and distribution and participate in domestic and overseas publishing exhibitions, conferences and forums.

Chairwoman of the founding committee of the UAE Publishing Association, Her Excellency Sheika Bodour bint Sultan Al-Qassimi said: “Our plans include implementing all necessary tools that will significantly help the publication of UAE books, the effective participation in local and overseas book fairs and the introduction of the works of UAE intellectuals to the world.”

Speaking about what the association might mean to publishers, associate publisher of Explorer Publishing, Claire England said: “In the current situation getting any support in the publishing industry will be welcomed by most publishing companies.

“However I think the association will need to make sure that they highlight the benefits in order to get publishers on board.”
