HP and United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities conducted a number of highly successful operations throughout 2018, to disrupt the trade of counterfeit HP branded cartridges across both the UAE and internationally.

From July through to December 2018, UAE officials raided a number of clandestine workshops and private residences in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where significant volumes of illicit, HP-branded products were concealed. As a result, these anti-counterfeiting successes have resulted in over 450,000 illicit items seized, and the criminal rings – who were both assembling and distributing the goods – seriously disrupted.

Counterfeiting is a crime. For users, such illegal imitations can cause a multitude of problems that can cause performance and reliability issues. Should your printer break because of using counterfeit printer ink or toner, you could also have issues with your manufacturer’s warranty becoming not applicable.

In contrast, original HP products are designed to meet HP’s strict quality and reliability standards, based on a long history of inventing and testing. Original HP LaserJet and HP inkjet cartridges, unlike counterfeits, benefit from superior performance and consistent results.

“HP is proud of our continued partnership with UAE authorities, delivering one of our most successful years to date in apprehending and prosecuting counterfeiters who break the law,” said Mathew Thomas, managing director, Middle East, Turkey and East Africa, HP. “Our unwavering efforts and commitment to removing counterfeit products from the market has delivered this outstanding result and is a true testament to the success of our Anti-Counterfeiting and Fraud Programme.”

Across EMEA over the last five years, approximately 12 million counterfeits and components have been seized by local authorities, supported by HP. HP has conducted over 4,500 audits and inspections (CPPAs and CDIs) of partners’ stocks or suspicious deliveries for customers.
Through HP’s Anti Counterfeiting and Fraud (ACF) Programme, the company actively educates its customers and partners to be vigilant against fake printing supplies. It also cooperates closely with local and global law enforcement authorities to detect and dismantle illegal operations that produce counterfeit HP printing components.
It should also be noted that, a similar operation took place between December 2017 and February 2018 – culminated in multiple raids on premises across the region, including outlet stores, clandestine workshops, and hidden warehouses, and resulted in the seizure of 35,400 illicit print components as well as 1,200 ready-for-sale counterfeit toner cartridges. Again, in April 2018, UAE officials carried out the major raid of several private residences and farms where significant volumes of HP and Samsung branded, illicit products were discovered, hidden in storage areas. As a result, the authorities seized over 46,000 ready-for-sale counterfeit toner cartridges and the criminal ring assembling and distributing the goods have been seriously disrupted.
