Smurfit Kappa invests in two packaging firms

Smurfit Kappa Group has acquired two paper-based packaging firms in Brazil, Industria de Embalagens Santana and Paema Embalagens, for $206m.

The two companies have three recycling containerboard mills, with a total capacity of 210,000 tonnes, and four corrugated packaging facilities between them.

FDA is banning three grease-resistant chemical substances

The US Food and Drug Admini-stration, FDA is banning three grease-resistant chemical substances from food packaging, reported Packaging News.  The chemicals, which are linked to cancer and birth defects, are used in pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, sandwich wrappers and other food packaging.  The packaging substances banned by FDA, in an order that takes effect 1 Feb, are perfluorinated compounds or PFCs, a class that includes the chemicals used to make DuPont’s Teflon and 3M’s Scotchgard.

Flint Group announces Dundee plant closure

Flint Group is planning to close its Dundee plant and move all manufacturing to the US in response to the "irreversible decline" in printed publications.

It said consolidation was “vital in light of the rapidly declining market" and excess capacity. The site saw an operating loss in 2015 of more than £1m.

Flint Group Flexographic Products has launched a new water-washable film-based letterpress plate.

The nyloprint WF-S (Water-washable Film based - Soft) plate replaces the nyloprint WF-M printing plate type and is available with immediate effect. The product has a softer plate surface for more flexible applications compared with its predecessor.

Fujifilm's Jet Press 720S for folding cartons applications

Fujifilm has announced that its B2 inkjet digital press, the Jet Press 720S, can now be configured to handle folding carton applications. 

The Jet Press 720S configured for folding carton applications has the ability to increase the vacuum pressure around the drum, together with a redesigned vacuum jacket, allowing the press to accommodate a more diverse range of heavier carton boards commonly used in packaging applications, said Fujifilm.

Flint buys Xeikon, new digital division

Flint Group has agreed to acquire the majority shareholder of Xeikon, XBC BV, and use the press and consumables manufacturer as the basis of a new digital division.

   The new venture will be called Flint Group Digital Printing Solutions and be led by Xeikon chief executive Wim Maes, as president. Flint Group said the new division will broaden its conventional and digital printing offering, giving it “a unique proposition of equipment, consumables and services across global markets”.

Konica Minolta has brought its toner-based roll-to-roll label printer to market under a new name, the bizhub Press C71cf.

The system uses Miyakoshi unwind and rewinding technology. It was shown as a prototype at the previous Labelexpo and then at Ipex 2014 as the C70RLC.
