Flint buys Xeikon, new digital division

Flint Group has agreed to acquire the majority shareholder of Xeikon, XBC BV, and use the press and consumables manufacturer as the basis of a new digital division.

   The new venture will be called Flint Group Digital Printing Solutions and be led by Xeikon chief executive Wim Maes, as president. Flint Group said the new division will broaden its conventional and digital printing offering, giving it “a unique proposition of equipment, consumables and services across global markets”.

Xeikon unveils its new Fusion concept

Xeikon has eschewed the trend for hybrid conventional/digital label lines, in favour of a new Fusion concept that pulls together different digital modules.

Konica Minolta has brought its toner-based roll-to-roll label printer to market under a new name, the bizhub Press C71cf.

The system uses Miyakoshi unwind and rewinding technology. It was shown as a prototype at the previous Labelexpo and then at Ipex 2014 as the C70RLC.

Olaf Lorenz, general manager of Konica Minolta’s international marketing division, said the Japanese manufacturer had opted to simplify the press by not including a laser die-cutting system.

Sappi will raise paper prices from 1st July "unsustainable" margins

One of the biggest paper producers in Europe has announced an 8% price rise on its coated fine and coated mechanical papers, from 1st July. Sappi has said its European business is “unsustainable at current price levels” and is set to raise prices to combat a long period of low prices, tight margins and the high cost of wood pulp.

Smurfit Kappa has built a lifesize, corrugated cardboard igloo in Pitea, Sweden to test the durability and resistance of its Kraftliner in extreme conditions of low temperatures and contact with water.
