Stora Enso divests business, sells Swedish subsidiary Re-board

Finnish paper manufacturing group Stora Enso has signed an agreement to divest the business and assets of its Swedish subsidiary Stora Enso Re-board to Culas, for an undisclosed sum.
“Stora Enso’s focus within packaging is on developing and delivering fibre-based solutions throughout the value chain,” said Peter Torstensson, senior vice-president and head of corrugated at Stora Enso’s Nordics Packaging Solutions division.

SPGPrints expands inkjet ink production

SPGPrints has doubling the size of its digital ink production facility in Netherlands for the second time in two years.
Scheduled to open in the final quarter of 2017, the expanded 1000m2 production facility is part of an €8 million capital investment programme. This will also include the building of the new Experience Center, dedicated to driving innovation in digital textile printing.

Ink manufacturer hubergroup has developed a cobalt-free siccative system for oxidatively drying sheetfed inks. These cobalt-free inks have been supplied as an alternative, with characteristics, colour distances and printability remaining unchanged announced the manufacturer.

UK paper merchants have increased the prices of uncoated paper by between 5% and 7%. The merchants blame a perfect storm of strong global demand, rising input prices and the weak pound for the move.  Demand in the Far East has resulted in Asian mills selling locally, where prices are strong, and they do not incur the transportation costs of shipping to Europe. PDF pre-flight project launched by GWG

Ghent Work Group (GWG), the global graphic arts best practice organisation, is canvassing industry opinion regarding the development of a standardised PDF pre-flight profile for wide-format printing. “PDF is becoming more common beyond commercial print in wide-format and packaging,” said GWG technical officer Andrew Bailes-Collins. “As a result we decided to develop a standard for wide-format.”

Kodak upbeat on inkjet prospects

Kodak is making a multi-pronged attack on the packaging market with its existing high-speed inkjet technology, and has reported that development of its next-generation Ultrastream product is on track.

Mondi has published a new  228-page visual book for its IQ colour range of uncoated tinted papers.  The IQ color range encompasses 36 standard colours, from pastels to bright neons and black.

Stora Enso has created a specific ICC profile for its PrimaPress uncoated paper range aimed at allowing publishers to achieve the best possible results using the grade, while delivering ink savings at the same time.
PrimaPress is a lightweight uncoated mechanical paper for heatset web offset printing, typically used for magazines, catalogues and inserts. It is manufactured at Stora Enso’s Kvarnsveden mill in Sweden using “an advanced super calendaring method” on the mill’s PM12 machine.

US fine paper specialist Mohawk has launched Strathmore Impress, a “super-premium” uncoated paper made from 100% cotton fibre that can be used for digital, letterpress, engraving and foiling.

Mill to invest in food packaging

Ahlstrom-Munksjö announced that it will be investing EUR 6.7 million in their new production capacity at its Saint Severin plant which is located in France to meet the growing demand for Genuine Vegetable Parchment (GVP) products used mainly in baking and cooking papers as well as in other food packaging solutions.
The project will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2018.

HP has launched two mid-range Latex printers at Fespa as well as a series of enhancements to its PageWide printers and an automated feeder for its flagship HP Scitex 17000.
The new 180sqm/hr 3.2m-wide HP Latex 3600 and 3200 have the same list price and offer the headline speeds and image quality as the 3500 and 3100 machines they replace, but due to a significant number of enhancements they offer a 30% productivity boost on the old machines.

Metsä Board the startup of its new extrusion coating line at its Husum mill in Sweden. The new state-of the-art coating line has an annual capacity of about 100,000 tonnes and represented an investment of EUR 38 million. Mimaki has announced the first details of its new 3D inkjet machine, due to be commercially available by the end of this year.  The machine, which is currently being shown on its digital stand, is still in prototype stage and is being called the 3DUJ-P for the moment.
Price point is likely to be at around €200,000 and first machines will have shipped by the end of 2017, with a number of machines due to be sent out for beta testing from this summer.

SwissQprint has launched two new flatbed printers, the Impala LED and the Nyala LED, at Fespa.
The manufacturer said the LED UV curing on these machines, as well as other structural improvements, gives greater precision, increases their versatility and makes them more environmentally friendly than comparable machines.
The Impala LED has a bed size of 2.5x2m and can print at a maximum speed of 180sqm/hr while the Nyala LED has a 3.2x2m bed and the machine can print at a maximum speed of 206sqm/hr.
