Me and My Machine: Epson's Stylus Pro 9900
What does the machine do?
It is a B0 or 44-inch large format inkjet printer. We print photo books and canvas prints. Our customers are photographers and end consumers. We print for indoor use only.
Why did you choose this particular machine? We have similar machine i.e. Epson 9800 for the last four years and have satisfactory results. We prefer to stick to something we know. The colour reproduction is very good and also the speed is three times faster than the older machine.
Did you look at other similar machines? And which ones?We looked at HP and Canon machines. We still feel that Epson was the best solution and their machines are used for such applications for long time.
Which features do you particularly like?Machine has new UltraChrome HDR (High Dynamic Range) ink set. The addition of orange and green provides a much wider colour gamut. Stylus Pro 9900 selects the optimium colour combination to accurately express the desired colour. This means less gradation, reduced graininess and greater constancy of colour under different light sources.
Is there anything you dislike or wish it had?We have to buy RIP software separately than machine. So it would be great to have a self-calibration and in built or integrated RIP at a more affordable cost.
How fast is it?We generally do not measure the speed. For canvas the speed is faster as resolution is not same like photo paper. We have two printers and speed is fast enough for us. Our need is fulfilled. The machine has rotary paper cutter, an entire sheet can be cut smoothly and cleanly in about two seconds.
How reliable is it?The machine is reliable and we had problems with media.
What is the quality like and what kind of response have you had from your clients? Our clients are photographers and till now nobody had any problems. We had no quality problems. It prints at 2880 x 1440 dpi bi-Directional, and uses variable-sized droplet technology.
How easy is it to use?The use is very easy. The media is simple to load. It is programmable and automatically aligns itself.
How much time or money has it saved? We have saved a lot on inks. Previously it used to consume three times more inks. Also ink cartridges are of higher capacity, so we do not need to change it regularly and we need to keep less inventory as well.
Would you say that it offers value for money?Yes, it gave us good value for money. The biggest expense is media. We use 15 to 20 rolls of canvas and photo paper in a month. We write off the machine in five years.
Has it won you any new work? Our clients remain same as photographers. Our business depends on marketing and quality of work. Our company is five years old and has 11 people.
Under what circumstances would you buy another? We may smaller machine before end of this year. For smaller sized jobs we think 24'' and 36'' machines will be suitable.
What about the pre- and after-sale service? The service is good. For problems we can call to the company and they come and fix the issue.
Who do you think it is suitable for? This printer is suitable for photography printing, fine art and proofing applications. Printer has two extra colours - green and orange, so it provides a much wider tonal range. This means higher colour accuracy, greater subtlety and smoother gradations for photo printing applications.
