The fifth edition of the international exhibition for paper, tissue, converting and allied industries in the region, Paper Arabia 2012 concluded to mixed response. Though there was one exhibitor less this year as compared to the last edition, 12% additional exhibition space was taken up, say the organisers.

It is ironic to think that just a day after the closing of this year’s Arab Media Forum, just across the border, Yemeni security forces were raiding an independent newspaper, which led to the death of a passerby.
Though Heidelberg struck a body blow to the organisers of IPEX by announcing its exit, Informa put on a brave face, with its MD saying, 'trade shows are a constant reflection of the industry' and 'there will be risers and there will be fallers'. With HP and Agfa saying goodbye to the 2014 event, Heidelberg's decision would be a bitter pill to swallow. However, on the bright side, the organisers still have time on their side to convince a few big names to join their bandwagon, and the situation may yet be retrieved.
Cyclical changes in any business or industry means an economic upswing followed by a plateau and then the eventual downward movement, and thankfully vice versa. Good times commonly alternate with bad times. So also with the printing industry, which is in the throes of change.
So you've invested in digital printing and a job comes through your web-portal, matched to a pre-tested job ticket it's automatically checked, driven through prepress operations, imposed and queued to the press. The operator checks that the right paper is loaded, selects the job and go! Now what do you do; outsourcing the finishing? Setup finishing equipment manually?
