Me and My Machine: Kluge EHG press

What does the machine do?

It is a platen press which can do foil stamping, embossing and die cutting. We can operate with the maximum sheet size of 559 x 762 mm. We use it for three application like foiling, embossed and lastly die cutting. We have invested in $400k with this machine.

Why did you choose this particular machine?

The brand is very old and it is known a reliable machine.

Did you look at other similar machines? And which ones?

We looked at Saroglia, an Italian machine. We looked at automation and quality while buying the machine. The deciding factors were automation, space, support and consumption of power.

Which features do you particularly like?

We liked the sharpness which we achieve on it. We can take the foil embossing upto 4 point size.

Is there anything you dislike or wish it had?

So far we did not find anything and satisfied with the output.

How fast is it?

The machine speed is 1,500 impressions per hour but we take the output at 800 to 900 sheets per hour. We use 100 to 400 gsm of boards.

How reliable is it?

We use this machine for premium quality tags and mainly for commercial jobs. There is a electronic foil control system which accommodates up to two separate foil draws. Each draw is driven by its own stepping motor and includes its own foil rewind shaft.

What is the quality like and what kind of response have you had from your clients?

We are now able to deliver the jobs in time with this automation. We are able to supply quality output at the same price level.

How easy is it to use?

The machine is not easy to use. The operator has to be well trained for this job. Once the make ready happens the production is easy. There was 5 days of training given to the operators.

How much time or money has it saved?

Average 25% of our labour time is saved.

Would you say that it offers value for money?

Yes. We deal with local industry in perfume, fashion, apparels etc and do jobs like tags, boxes, brochures and catalogues with run length like 10 to 15k prints.

Were there any difficulties experienced during the installation or after?

Yes, the principal's recommendations for the pre-installation inspection was not done properly. These included power, air supply and foundations etc. This was the first machine in the region.

How was the pre and post installation service?

As this was the first machine in the region, we could get the online support from the principal's USA office. It took 2 days for installation and five days for training.

Has it won you any new work?

Our existing clients are happy and now we will work on developing the new markets.

Who do you think it is suitable for?

It is suitable for quality conscious people. When the quality is assured the money will come and that's what we at Print House believe.

Under what circumstances would you buy another?

If we get any long-term contract based project we can buy another machine. We are also planning to adopt some innovative ideas in the post press section within six months depending on the market conditions.
